Mr Snuff UK postage: excessive.

I looked at ordering from the above for the first time but they quote six powwwnds ninety nine (deliberate mispelling to beat an intrusive filter) Uk first class. That is way more than mysmokingshop, Toque and The Pipe Shop. Deal breaker I am afraid and the highest UK postal charges for a small item I have ever come across. I also don't like being forced to register before checkout :/

Mr.Snuff is for international customers and Snuffstore.uk is for UK customers, both are run by the same owner but snuffstore should have cheaper shipping for UK customers
  • miamimarkmiamimark Moderator
So, don't order, who cares? Why start a new thread about it?
  • matteobmatteob Member
Sadly the Molens snuff I was looking at does not seem to be on the latter...not in the nice chest box anyway. I thought they were seperate entities but ok thank you.
  • Good thing you live over there. Here it is any where between 30% and 70% of the total for shipping. Even with that, snuff is still very economical. I could smoke a $10 cigar in two hours or buy $10 of snuff that would last up to a month.

Yeah I pay around $15-20 for shipping to Australia, nothing in comparison to the tobacco tax they slug you with. As n9inchnails has already said MrSnuff is for us foreigners, Snuffstore.uk if for you locals. Possibly if youre after Molens snuff which MrSnuff has though Snuffstore doesnt, try sending a message to Dave he may be able to do something for you. Though if the postage is just a few pounds more thats nothing in comparison to cigarettes.
In miamimarks defense you probably should have stated in the OP that you were looking for Molens snuff which is unavailable from the local Snuffstore.uk. Eitherway your best bet would be to message Dave at MrSnuff.
In case you weren't already aware MrSnuff owns and pays for this website, so a post title like "Mr.Snuff UK postage: excessive" could rub some people up the wrong way who can end up paying a heck of alot more for postage and snuff in general.  We can pay up to $30 for a 25g tin here in Aus before shipping :P

    ^^^^^^^^ Good points

I can understand that you're annoyed about the shipping, but that can be the nature of the beast and I fail to see what you hoped to achieve with the post.  A company might well have to pick an option that suits the majority of the orders but that might well come at a cost to smaller orders (single items, maybe).  Most online places for me are expensive for a single tin as there is no price difference on shipping until you hit a certain weight or value, so 3 tins shipping is the same as 1.

If I don't like it, I go elsewhere. If this one shop has the snuff that I want, I either pay it or I don't.

As for the "intrusive filter" it is just that the text encoding doesn't allow for certain characters.  It's not a filter as such, and certainly not there to intrude.

What would it cost to send yourself to pick it up in person?

Hello @Aamon  I hope you are well.

Although   "MrSnuff owns and pays for this website,"   and I am grateful it exists,   I also pay out for my computer and internet broadband connection to access the adverts and shops here. So we both shell out cash.

It is not entirely  a charitable cause.
He does benefit from being able to advertise his business to the World.
In the UK this is the only way tobacco products can be advertised.
Newspaper and  Magazine adverts for tobacco products are not allowed, nor television and radio, also cinema commercials. Racing and sports event associations banned.  Advertising hoardings in the street and tobacconists window displays are all a thing of the past.

Tobacco products here have to be kept out of sight, behind sliding doors or kept in drawers under the counter.  One tobacconists I know of has replaced its glass frontage with frosted glass so that it can retain its old style shop displays inside.
All kept out of sight and under the counter alongside of the mucky mags. .
Sites like Snuffhouse  and shop websites are the only places left to advertise your products.

So you can see that paying for this sites upkeep is not exactly all charity and money down the drain for the owners.
I think Mr.Snuff should have a thick enough skin by now to fend off a few jeers and ride a couple of punches now and then.

Nothing really to do with the original post but its good to get it off yer chest.

  • I registered with Mr Snuff to place an order and was so shocked by the postage charges at checkout I didn't go through with the order. Two kilos can be sent second class with Royal Mail for GBP 2.90 (with a franking machine even less!) Since about April 2017 Royal Mail tracks everything too so no risk of 'it didn't arrive' claim from the buyer. Is Mr Snuff in the tobacco business or the rip-off business?

    @Hoffwell yes exactly.

@ArtChoo my sentiments exactly. Nobody does anything for nothing these days. I am new here so I am learning the ropes but nice to see a well reasoned and civilized post. I appreciate it :)

I was not jeering or attempting to rock any boats nor am I "annoyed." will happily give Snuffstore a go. I thought it was a seperate entity. Maybe I should of just asked how the figure quoted is calculated. I was not prepared for ill tempered messages from mods or snarky comments tbh. I am a civilized kind of bloke and kind of expect that back. I am a member of a few shaving forums which allow for a few rants and yet stay civilized. A clash of cultures I guess. Lord knows there are some snuffers, particularly on Youtube who like to put the world to rights :/

As to posting you get some wild variations everywhere with online commere. Some of the quotes from the US in particular are crazy (if they are prepared to sell to you at all: many do not seem to realize ther is a world outside the US) and yet there is a chap who sells straight razors and other shaving stuff out of Texas who sent me a razor and other stuff for five bucks (Larry at Whipped Dog Razors: a little shout out for a total gentleman)

I'll draw a line under this now. I regret posting it and apologies.

the shipping may seem a little expensive but it cant be easy for a relatively small company to ship almost anywhere on the globe. there has got to more to it than just boxing it and slapping a label on it.
i guess im more asking a question than making a statement. maybe someone knows more about the logistics of shipping a heavily regulated product world wide
  • ArtChooArtChoo Member
@peacock   People are not compelled to explain how they run their business, but a  brief explanation of the whys and wherefores of the process would have been much more agreeable than the response from  @miamimark  of  "who cares?"
I most definitely care, and hopefully a few others here care.
Learning about the different vendor customer service encountered and value for money is one of the many things to be learned on forums such as this.
If vendors were to use terms like  "who cares?".    it would make me think about the vendor, and think a second time  before placing an order with them.  I would wonder what would be their response  if something serious went awry with any order placed with them.   "who cares?" would be ringing in my ears.
@matteob       I personally think you have nothing to apologise for and should be commended for alerting potential customers to the state of play with certain suppliers.
You also mentioned in one of your posts  My Smoking Shop     I have no connection with them, but I can heartily recommend their service and charges to anyone residing in the UK.
    Cheers All.

  • Easy answer, switch to Toque! ;)

@Roderick you don't miss a trick do you! I do have several of your snuffs and enjoy them. I would like to see more of your snuffs with a bit more of a kick though. I have the original and the Camphor and Clove and they are lovely but my favourite is your SP Extra. I would like to see that higher strength base used for more flavours.

Oh wel as I said let's leave it there.
  • miamimarkmiamimark Moderator
I'm just a mod on this forum, I don't work for Mr Snuff so I would have no business explaining anything to anyone about his shipping prices. My "who cares" comment was mine alone. If I had a question about shipping prices I would email him directly, I wouldn't post negative comments on a public forum. I'm entitled to my opinion just like anyone else.

    Cool...

Try some of the Toque blends that have rustica as a base or straight up rustica for a good kick.
  • matteobmatteob Member
    @Psicko which ones are they?
  • PsickoPsicko Member
There is a bunch. My favorite that I've tried is the Toque ambrosia. Toque USA whisky and honey is good.
The toque quit is also pretty good.
  • i really dont care about the current shipping prices. it's like if you try to order something from China, guess what the shipping is a hundred dollars. if i order a load of snuff and get shipping at fair prices. i am happy

@matteob I apologize if anything in my comment came across as crass, as this wasnt intended at all by any means.
@ArtChoo I have been well thanks for asking. You make a solid point about this being one of the few places left to advertise tobacco, one which I had no considered (and surprisingly) had not even occurred to me prior to your post. I understand that MrSnuff isnt doing anything for free and does profit largely indirectly from this site. The whole "in case you weren't already unaware" comment was more of a fun fact than directly implying anything.
  • @matteob Toque will custom make you 500 grams any snuff you want. You want a mentholated  chocolate peanut butter with coffee on a rustica mixed base he can probably do that for you.

When I spoke to Roderick awhile back he mentioned he was pretty swamped at moment and was unable to do custom orders. I would love to do another, though maybe @Roderick could shed some light.

I guess it always pays to shop around to get the best deal.

I am thinking it is best to buy in bulk so that shipping costs are a lower % of the overall price you pay. But of course if you are new to snuff you might not know what you like best & so why would you buy a bulk of something you are not sure if you like it?

Luckily I know what I like and have contacted the producer directly and can buy bulk direct from them for a sensible price.

But in the early days you just have to shop around, try as many different types until you get to know what you like and bite the bullet that shipping costs are going to be a significant % of your overall price you pay.

Basement is correct, we can do most things and Aamon is also correct we are swamped at present. We are training a new person who will help with the pressure. It is a difficult time, you want your business to expand but, you also want to stay in touch with your customers. You guys are the life blood of Toque and I never want to lose you.

Yes, ridiculously expensive. Sometimes it was cheaper to have certain snuffs bought from snuffstore.de. In fact after ordering a few times I just stopped buying from there because the very idea of expensive national postage was somehow insulting. Anyway, once in a while, they featured snuffs on the brink of extinction that I just couldnt afford to miss.
