Musty smell

I recently transferred some old snuff from quart mason jars to half pint jars.  This stuff was pretty old - several years.  Some of it had a musty smell to it.  No mold, just a musty smell.  Any ideas on what's up?  Is this snuff still useable?

no clue. Though that sounds gross even if not bad for you.

    sounds bad actually.
  • My oldest snuff is now 7 years old, but this has not happened to me before. So far all of them have retained their original flavours and moisture. I keep them in clip top Kilner jars, filled to the maximum.
  • It might be anaerobic bacteria. If that were the case, it may or may not be harmless.
  • I could buy the bacteria theory but it occurred in several different jars.
  • Did you try to air them out a bit, just to see if it's a deep fermentation smell?
What kinds of snuffs are these, natural or scented?

    Samuel Gawith?
  • @tobaccobob I agree with this guy, air it out a bit first. What brand/flavor was the snuff?
