My snuff storage

It took a while but I finally settled on how I wanted to go about keeping my snuff stored and organized.

I put up a couple of simple shelves in a room used for storage in my basement.

I then went to a local cigar shop and talked to the owner who was nice enough to give me a dozen old wooden cigar boxes. The lady wanted to give them to me free, but I insisted she take $20 for them because I saw a sign next to where they had them stored which read $2 each. I like a good deal, but I also don't like to feel like I've taken something for nothing ;-).

I also purchased a nice little humidor from the same shop. The price read $65, but she insisted since I forced her to take $20 for the cigar boxes that she would only charge me $50 for the humidor.

So after spending just $70 I went home with my new equipment and set out to put my plan to work and this is how it turned out.

My Basement Storage Setup
All snuffs in the boxes are taped shut with electrical tape
And
Each box has a small piece of wet sponge in it to act as a makeshift humidor

All in all, I'm happy with my setup, and just thought I'd share some pictures which may help others get an idea of how they may wish to store their collections.

  • Nice going, that's a very good looking setup you got yourself there!

Sure beats my piles of tins!

Nice job. Did you get any of the packing tobacco that comes in the acid boxes? Makes a nice snuff.
  • Thanks Snuffbox, and Trout. Can't say that I got lucky enough to bet any of the packing tobacco as all the boxes were completely empty save for a few very dry leaves here and there which I discarded without thinking.
  • Pretty nifty setup you've got there. I think I might do something similar.
  • Be careful with the Acid boxes. Being flavored cigars, it sticks around inside the boxes. It could change the flavors of your snuff. Usually cigar stores can't give those boxes away for free even because nothing can be stored in them

phillysci, I was worried about that also. I don't know too much about cigars but I was of the understanding that ACID brand cigars were strongly flavored. Before I purchased those boxes I gave them each a big smell from a clean nose and could not detect any type of scent other than a bit of wood. Maybe they had been aired out for a long time before I happened along, I don't know....
  • Well, than it's a very nice set up. I am a big cigar smoker, and stick to more traditional cigars...just wanted to give you a heads up. Would hate to see your supply go bad. The cedar boxes are great for storing tobacco.

Very nice indeed. We should all have so much. I do have one concern. It is the temperature fluctuation in your basment where these cigar boxes are. I understand that a controlled temperature is relatively important for ultimate storing conditions. Congratulations on your find. those boxes are a beautiful choice. I'm Proud of you.

Nice job, looks great, glad the original aroma has disipated. I believe its important to properly store your tobacco, whatever the type. But is it really necessary to store snuff in a humidor? I have a 2' x 2' x 4 ' humidor to store my cubans in, with a fan and a humidity source. I keep it in my basement also as it has a constant temperature. Maybe I should start storing my expanding variety of snuff in my humidor. Btw, I have a few hundred cubans that I don't smoke much anymore if anyone is interested in buying some. They have been properly stored for several years. I understand that they get better as they age. I offer a nice variety pack. And I'm motivated to sell all of em as I don't smoke anymore and I am moving long distance and don't want to move these also. So The best deals are now. A brought these back with me from many trips to the island. Whisper me if you are interested...........
