I’m on the cholesterol lowering drug Simvastatin, on every box I receive from the Chemist is a warning; Avoid eating grapefruit and/or drinking grapefruit juice during treatment.
I often wonder when taking my grapefruit snuff I’m OK! It’s no good asking my doctor, he would say no, and probably tell me not to take any snuff. Full Stop.

I've been on Simvastatin and TOQUE Grapefruit for quite a while now and I'm still OK and going strong. Must admit though, I sniff the Grapefruit only, never swallow it.

    Don't worry, be happy !!!!
  • It's likely a bad idea as some of the chemicals in grapefruit make certain drugs stronger. Though I think the chemical actualy works on the G.I. tract function not in the blood. I would look it up and see.
  • That is a very good question. I'm not quite sure how snuff is made...I'm guessing that an artificial grapefruit flavor is used, so in my 'uneducated' opinion, I wouldn't think this would be the same as 'real' grapefruit. Just my opinion...

Just my 2 cents but alot of times even though its natural flavoring its not actually grapefruit (just for example) that they use to make grapefruit flavored (or scented) things with. Next time you get anykind of fruit flavored soda or even juice that isnt pure "grapefruit" juice but is "grapefruit" flavored juice i bet you it dos'nt even have grapefruit in the ingredients more along the lines of white grape juice and other natural fruit juices or something like that. i know im kind of rambling on but to sum it up my point is they often use a combination of unrelated ingredients to accomplish the flavor/scent.
    edit:
maybe roderick can shed some light on whether or not my guespothesy is correct or not here.
  • I think he's using natural citrus oils for that one. THats the reason he can't put the paper gasket under the lid on the grapefruit or st. clements?

  • Thanks for the replies, I've been taking grapefruit snuff for some time now with no ill effects. I did forget once and picket up two grapefruit's with my shopping and felt really crap after eating them. I remember reading somewhere on the Internet that they can increase the strength of the drug up-to 5 times.

@ Jarhog, That's a thought on the peanut butter snuff. I don't have any problem there, but if there are nuts in the snuff then Roderick will have to put a warning on the tins: "This Product May Contain Nut Traces" together with the tobacco health warning. :-)
  • My 10g tin of Grapefruit does have a gasket, same as all the other tins. I eat grapefruit quite often and never felt any side effects. But, we are all different. A bit off topic: I use an aromatic revitalizer roll on and I've just noticed it contains pure essential oils of: Lemon, Grapefruit and Rosemary. Is it possible that Grapefruit snuff can have a soothing effect?

  • After reading the "THAT'S what that flavor is" thread and looking at the wiki I think maybe bergamot may also be a concern for those taking statins.
  • According to Wikipedia the CONSUMPTION of grapefruit or grapefruit juice can be harmful. I doubt very much that taking a grapefruit scented snuff can be harmful.

@ Juxtaposter, Statins & Bergamot, thanks very much for that. I just looked it up and now I find I can't drink my Earl Grey Tea! Goodbye all I think I'll chop myself.
  • At least there aren't statins in Old Empire!
  • "At least there aren't statins in Old Empire!" But there could be Bergamot & Grapefruit in Old Empire.
  • Please chop slowly as to allow us all to enjoy! Screw your Earl Grey but don't stop with the S.P..
