Does that taste a lot like rye bread, in general, then? I think I had some of it from a European foods shop a while back.

Some kind of Chinese black tea right now.

@Mr_O, yes, that's it. Like a rye bread. Some brands are made from true dried rye bread and brewing relies on airborn yeast; the very best of them contain only natural CO2, low amount of sugar and come preservatives-free. But most are made from concentrate/malt extract, are brewed with added yeast, carbonated, dyed with caramel and contain preservatives. Ersatz kvass is even sweetened with artificial sweeteners.

Homemade kvass often contains alcohol - close to a light beer. Local standard allows up to 1.5% in industrially-made kvass - it still qualifies as non-alcoholic drink. However, vast majority of kvasses come virtually alcohol-free, and the drink itself is generally considered non-alcoholic.

Interesting! I’ll have to look out for them around here! I think the one that I tried was claiming to be non alcoholic. Seems like I remember it being pretty tasty.
